About the Event
"The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more."
Dungeons and Dragons is arguably the core of all modern tabletop roleplaying games, where you create and play a character through a series of stories.
In this class, we introduce all curious nerds to this big wide world of adventure in easy to understand ways using the 5th edition ruleset. We will walk you through the basic mechanics of the game, help you to understand your character and their skills, guide you through combat situations and roleplay (no silly voices or acting skills necessary!), and make sure that everyone feels SUPER PUMPED and ready to play more!
Approximately 2 hours will be spent thoroughly teaching the basics of the game, which sounds like a lot but I *promise* won't be boring (If anyone is caught sleeping, I will throw a dwarven axe at their head!). Then, after some light refreshments, we will delve into a 1-shot session where you will play a premade character through a series of encounters designed to help you understand what a typical session would look like, including a full 3D handmade battlemap, hand painted figurines, and the prettiest dice. We will also have special effect lighting and props to really set the mood....
Typical questions:
◉ Do I need to be good at Acting? Math? Have a history of gaming? Already love fantasy?
NO! You can come as the living piece of garbage that you apparantly think you are. DND is a game about inclusivity, and everyone is encouraged to try it out. Whatever your reasons for wanting to learn, we welcome you!
◉ Should I bring anything?
NO! Only an open mind. If you have a set of dice (d4, d6, d8, 2d10, d12, d20) then that's fine - but we will have enough for people to borrow, if they promise not to curse them. Feel free to also bring a notebook, but we will supply pens and paper for notetaking.
◉ How many people can play?
A good number of people to play in a group rarely exceeds 6. If we are more than 6 players, then I will have another DM on call to come and host another table as we all go through the same adventure together. It can be super fun to compare how each group's adventure varied given the choices they made at the end!
◉ What is the age limit?
DND has no real age limit - I have hosted games for those as young as 9 before and it was super fun! However, for this session, we are asking that no one less than 15 years old joins. If you have someone who is younger than this and would like to join, get in touch and we can try and arrange a more "kids friendly" session!
◉ Can I come alone?
Yes! You are welcome to come alone, and I promise it won't be horribly awkward.
◉ What if I want to learn how to DM/GM? Can I still come?
Yes! Even if you have some familiarity with DND5e from before, then you are still welcome to come. Learning the basics from a foundational standpoint is very important to being a good DM. Send me a message before hand and we will make it work :)
◉ If I am a known troll whose only joy in life is to ruin other people's fun, can I still come?
NO! Although DND is built upon inclusivity and mischief is always expected, if anyone is at the table is making others uncomfortable, and after being told that their behavior is unacceptable, then they will be asked to leave and not offered a refund like the child they are acting like.
◉ Why do I have to pay / why is the price so expensive?
As much as I wish I could teach this for free (and have in the past!), preparing and teaching a 5 hour class is a lot of work! I hope you appreciate the amount of love and fun you're about to receive by coming, and respect that by understanding my time and experience should be compensated.
